Phillipe Jacinto Velazquez.....Oils on Canvas

WORK:

My first solo exhibit which was held in Pittsburgh 1992. It took three years to complete 7 paintings for this exhibit. All of the paintings were airbrushed super-realistic marbles on canvas. Since 1998 I have been focusing on oil painting and educating myself as to the ways of the masters. The artist whose work sets the standard for all art.

Other exhibits: A solo show in Columbus, Ohio and I was also part of a group show at the Kings Gallery in Columbus. I have also hosted several exhibits at Bossa Nova in Pittsburgh, PA.

My work experience has covered a wide range of mediums over the past 10 years. I spent 2 years freelancing for a video production company where I created animated commericals for broadcast television earning a TELLY award for my animated spot for The United Way Charities. I also have received an ADDY award for an animated spot I created for Eat n Park restaurants. I was then hired out by a public relations firm, Hill & Knowlton, to create powerpoint presentations for GE Captiol in Connecticut, NewYork and Puerto Rico. The job included design and layout of the presentation as well as photo research, photo retouching and flash animation work. I have also produced a multi-language interactive educational CD titled CBRN for Mine Safety Appliances. A Pittsburgh based company. This is just one of several product presentations and updates that I have produced for MSA over the past 10 years. Since I have always been working as a freelancer I was able to work with the Pittsburgh Public Theater and Point Park University painting large scenic backdrops for several theater productions over a three year period. The theater work required me to create faux woodwork, marble floors and large canvas sky views. For the past two years I have work exclusively with Home Run Pictures, a Pittsburgh base 3D animation studio. I have been working along with two other 3D artists producing several "dome shows" for various museums and science centers across the country. Some of the images are on display here on this web site.
Presently I am working with Maya a 3D software program and Photoshop.

PERSONAL:

I have been painting and drawing for as long as I can remember. There was no decision to draw or paint. It was a natural event and it continues to this day. The roads and direction I have taken and the mediums I have utilized to create with, over my lifetime, have never been motivated by money, but by the desire to gain an understanding as to how color, light, and movement work together. I have always felt moved by color... inside. To provoke a smile... to raise an eyebrow. To make one feel...how....how is paint transformed into feeling.

I was very fortunate to have had parents that encouraged and reminded me that my family and cultural background was full of talented people. My grandparents were both artisans and musicans in mexico. I have no formal training. My training came from painting all the walls in the house where I was raised. My parents allowed me to paint murals on the walls in almost every bedroom and basement in our house. I was born and raised in Lorain. An industrial town near Cleveland, Ohio. I went to the museum often by myself and would sit and stare at the paintings. My parents bought me paint and brushes and books about the master artists from Mexico and Italy My mother made many personal sacrifices for me to have the materials I needed to paint. There was also alot of art in our home since my parents returned to Mexico often. Paintings and sculptures from Central America, so I was very influenced by my culture early on in my life. There were also many very talented latino artist and musicans in the community.

My painting techniques are simple and very straight forward...I usually create the image on my computer using Photoshop. I will spend all my time designing and working out the problems of the concept here before I proceed to the canvas. I stretch each canvas myself and prep it for the paint. I then hand draw each image directly onto the canvas. I don't limit myself to any color tablet or theory....instead I view the work and it's surroundings....whether I am producing my own art or reproducing that of another. I use color to create the feeling I am trying to get across to the viewer. These elements are the dictator of my color tablet.

Cultural Heritage

I am of Cuban and Mexican decent... I was born in Lorain, Ohio a city just west of the Cleveland area. Largely industrial and very international.
