The Stigmata after Caravaggio

Oils on Canvas 30 in x 24in
My mother introduced me to this painting when I was a child and I have always loved the grace and emotion that was captured here with paint and light by the artist. I actually got to see a copy of it while I was in Italy. It took many layers of paint to capture the soft radiant texture of the angel's skin.

I also played with the focal point....bringing your eye in and out of focus

The paintings on view below are my classical paintings. During the late 90's I decided I wanted to become a more accomplished painter.
I decided to teach myself how to paint like the master artists of the 16th and 17th centuries. And so I began to read, study and view their work and to copy some of the paintings. What better way to learn how to paint like a master artist then to copy a master artist work...
Growing up I spent most of my time teaching myself how to draw with the help of some art books. I also started studying the paintings and scrupture that filled our home. My parents regularly returned to Mexico and they would bring back all kinds of artifacts from the old country. Before long I was painting floats for the local fiestas and murals for the local Latino community center.
I also started to study the Mexican and Spanish artists Diego Rivera, Herrera, Siqueiros and Diego Velazquez de Silva. I tried to copy and learn from their work and techniques. By my early teens I started following the work of Salvador Dali producing large superrealistic paintings. I then turned my attention to the airbrush to produce murals as well as car and van paintings. Wanting to enter the commerical art field I attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh to better understand the relationship between type and images. From there my freelance computer graphic and video work took off and I have continued to work for local and regional clients.
The "classical" paintings on view here were produced over a 8 year period following my visit to Italy. Reproducing these masters paintings was my way of educating myself to the methods and techniques employed by these Great Artists of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The work here is not an attempt to exploit the works of these great artists. I only hope to bring to light the beauty and content I have found in each piece and share it with you the viewer. This was my way of gaining insight and growing in my work as I am self taught. Actually painting, and reproducing these fine master works of art was the only way to understand how it is done....capturing emotion and light with color.

Catherine of Alexandria after Caravaggio. Detail of painting
Oil on Canvas 26 x 28inches
The legend of Catherine of Alexandria, although she lived in the 4 century it wasn't until the fifteenth century that her legend grew to the status of Saint hood. When I saw this painting , I fell in love with the expression of wonder in her eyes, a sort of daring look. I feel I have captured that look and expression here. The blouse and fabric were very difficult to render. The most intense for me yet to produce.
$1,500

This is my latest Caravaggio reproduction called Mathew and the Angel.
I am teaching myself how to paint by studying the works and techniques of Caravaggio, Michaelangelo Mersi.
By studying Caravaggio's character placement, his flow of light and placement of shadows I hope to improve on my own painting concepts.
The history of this painting is very interesting. Caravaggio created it as one of three altar pieces for the Contarelli Chapel in 1602.
The painting was rejected by the Bishop and bought by a local dealer named Vincenzo Giustiniani.
Many years later the orginial painting was destroyed in a fire. Some years ago I found a copy on the Caravaggio web site and fell in love with
the gestures and expressions on the faces of these two lovely creatures. Caravaggio's brilliance was in his play on light and shadows.
Moving your eye about the framed action . The actual size of the original painting was more than 6ft x 4ft.
My version is slightly larger than 28 x 22 inches. It took 6 weeks to complete.
I hope you enjoy viewing this painting as much as I have enjoyed painting it.
Oils on Canvas paper mounted on board. 28 x 22 inches.
